Training Basics - Step Up
Written By Isabelle Brinan, MSc
What?
Step up is when your parrot steps onto a hand or a perch willingly
with both feet.
Why?
Put simply, it is a form of transportation, especially for birds who lack
the ability to fly and a way of transferring your feathered friend from
one perch/ room to another safely. It can be especially helpful in case
of an emergency or if they're being a bit cheeky!

How?
1. The bird approaches you/ the perch (do not chase your bird or push your hand into them, give them a choice)
2. The bird indicates (they lean forward or they raise a foot; they do something to say that they are willing and ready)
3. You get both of their feet on you or the perch before you move your hand (builds trust and stability)
4. You mind their tail/ body when moving them away from the perch, or wherever they were, so as not to bump a tail (this is big for cockatiels, conures, and macaws)
5. You reinforce! Whether it's a treat, time with you, a dance party, or getting to play in a new area, there's something in it for the bird. Make them want to step up, let them know it's worth their time and cooperation!
