Training Basics - Bonding
Written By Isabelle Brinan, MSc
What? Bonding is building a relationship with your parrot by starting with just spending time with them, existing in a space together. This can be build upon but the idea is that there is no expectations or pressure on them to do anything they don't want to do. They get to choose.
Why? It starts your relationship off on equal terms, where there is no pressure and helps build trust by allow your bird to make a choice, which is significant when it comes to training later on. You can co-exist in each other's spaces without the need to 'perform'.

How? Start simple by being in the room with them going about your day, building up to maybe talking to them and looking at them while you do so. You can eventually approach their cage doing the same thing with no sudden movements and remembering not put them under any pressure or expectation to do anything for your attention. Pay attention to body language, if they move away don't get closer and give them some space. If they come closer to you continue what you are doing but make sure not to make any sudden movements as this can scare them away. You can even read to them, listen to music or watch tv together, all these things will help with bonding as you're co-existing without expectation. Throughout all of this, give them treats for nothing other than just existing in the same space, again no expectations or pressure from you. Parrots are flock animals and need social interaction, sharing meal times for example will help them start to see you as a flock member further building upon that bond.
